How was GELI developed and what are its benefits?
The Global Executive Leadership Inventory is part of an extensive research project investigating the daily
actions and behaviors of effective global executives. The Inventory was developed by Dr. Manfred F.R.
Kets de Vries to help executives evaluate their performance in carrying out 12 primary leadership tasks
that he had seen were important to senior executives. Because there is frequently a significant difference
between what leaders say that they do and what they actually do, the Inventory was designed as a 360-
dgree feedback instrument, allowing leaders to compare their self-perceptions to the perceptions of
others.Click here to read an article about the instrument's development (Published in International Journal of Resource Management http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals)
This kind of a 360-degree feedback system has several important benefits, including the
following:
- It can serve as an early warning system, highlighting areas in which leaders need to develop
and cautioning them about their "blind spots"
- It can provide an opening for constructive dialogue, both horizontally and vertically,
redefining superior-subordinate relationships and contributing to a more open, network-
oriented corporate culture
- It can serve as a rough assessment tool to identify people who have high leadership potential
- Although the instrument is recommended for developmental purposes, it can help managers
make administrative decisions during the performance appraisal process
- It can contribute to a general organizational change assessment leading to organizational
transformation initiatives.

Who is GELI Online for?
GELI is an ideal training and coaching tool for multi-national organizations that are
looking to attract, train, and retain the best and brightest next-generation leaders. Although the
Global Executive Leadership Inventory can be taken by individuals on their own, it is most
effective when used in group settings such as workshops and retreats where a facilitator can help
the leader understand and apply the results. One effective way to use the instrument is in a
natural work group where all the leaders have a stake in the results, making change more likely.
The Inventory also provides executive coaches with a tool for helping individuals recognize their
strengths and understand where they need to focus their development efforts.
Originally designed for top executives, including CEOs, the Inventory is appropriate for a
wide range of leaders, including mid-level managers, junior and senior executives, and
organizational directors working in profit and non-profit organizations.

Contextual Definitions:
Administrator
Administrators purchase the appropriate number of Licenses, set up, and manage the Leaders (and in some cases, the Observers) who will be taking the GELI. They may come from an organization's internal staff or be external consultants or coaches. Typically, they are also in charge of arranging a meeting or workshop where the GELI Feedback Report is discussed with Leaders.
Leader
Leaders take the GELI Self but also select, set up, and manage the Observers who will help assess their leadership behaviors. Leaders are set up by their Administrator.
Observer
Observers are selected and set up by the Leader (or in some cases the Administrator can perform this task). They come to GELI Online to fill out the Observer survey for that Leader.
