GELI Scoring Software uses a number of common terms in ways that may seem unfamiliar at first. Below is a glossary terms that you will find while using GELI Scoring Software.

Active Leader - In managing your Leaders, you have the choice of having them Active or Archived. Active Leaders appear on your Active Leader summary table. How you use these designations is your decision, but typically these Leaders have begun but not finished the GELI process. See also Archived Leader.

Administrator - The Administrator, sometimes referred to as a Facilitator or Executive Coach, sets up Leader profiles, administers the Leader and Observer surveys, and generates Feedback Reports.

Archived Leader - In managing their Leaders, Administrators have the choice of categorizing them as Active or Archived. Archived Leaders appear on an Archived Leader summary table. Administrators typically use this classification to remove the Leader from their Active Leader table, yet preserve the Leader's profile information for future use.

GELI – short for Global Executive Leadership Inventory

Instrument – See Inventory

Inventory – or Inventory or Survey. GELI actually consists of two inventories, one for the Leader's self-assessment (GELI Self) and the other for the Observers assessing the Leader (GELI Observer). Each is composed of 100 questions.

Kets de Vries, Manfred – Manfred Kets de Vries is a clinical professor of leadership development and holds the Raoul de Vitry d’Avaucourt Chair of Leadership Development at INSEAD (Europe's premier business school). He is program director of INSEAD’s top management seminar, “The Challenge of Leadership.” He has also held professorships at McGill University and Harvard Business School. He is the author, co-author, or editor of 20 books, including several published with Jossey-Bass. Manfred is a consultant on organizational design/transformation and executive development to leading U.S., Canadian, European, African, and Asian companies. His clients have included Aegon, Accenture, Bain Consulting, L.M.Ericsson, GE Capital, Goldman Sachs, Heineken, KPMG, Lego, Lufthansa, Nokia, Xerox, Shell, Standard Bank of South Africa, Unilever and Volvo Car Corporation. As an educator and consultant he has worked in more than thirty countries. He is a regular writer for a number of magazines. His work has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Business Week, The Economist, The Financial Times, and The International Herald Tribune. His books and articles have been translated into seventeen languages. He is a member of ten editorial boards. He has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management.

Leader - The person/participant being assessed. A given Leader will self-assess, as well as be assessed by Observers.

GELI Feedback Report - The document that includes all of the assessment data provided by the Leader and Observers.

GELI-Self - The GELI survey taken by the Leader for self-assessment.

GELI-Observer – The GELI survey taken by Observers so that they are able to provide an assessment of a particular Leader.

Observer - People who work closely with the Leader, and who have agreed to provide the Leader with feedback on how they view his or her leadership behavior.

Participant Workbook – This interactive workbook workbook enables Leaders to:

  • State the advantages of and concerns about 360-degree feedback
  • Identify the 12 key characteristics of successful global leaders
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses on each of the 12 key characteristics
  • Develop an action plan that specifies what they will do to improve their leadership competencies

Questionnaire – or Inventory or Survey. Term often used when referring to the inventory, GELI Self, or GELI Observer.

Report - See Feedback Report

Survey - Term occasionally used in referring to GELI Self or GELI Observer. More commonly refers to the demographic survey Leaders are encouraged to take after completing their GELI Leader Survey.

Workshop - An event conducted by the Administrator or Facilitator in which the GELI Feedback Report is given and discussed with Leaders. This event might also take shape as a one-on-one coaching session.
