General Questions
What is GELI and what is GELI Online?
GELI Online is an electronic tool that was especially designed for administering the 360-degree leadership assessment instrument – Global Executive Leadership Inventory (GELI). Developed by internationally reknowned business scholar, Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries, GELI is designed to measure specific leadership behaviors and provide feedback that contributes toward the leadership development of today’s globally-minded executive.
GELI Online is a web-based application that requires Internet access, It allows an Administrator of GELI to enter data from paper surveys and generate reports, it allows Leaders to set up Observers and take their surveys online, and it allows Observers to complete their surveys online as well.
What is 360-degree leadership assessment?
Refers to a type of leadership training that involves feedback from several people (from manager to direct reports to colleagues and business associates) who have observed or worked with the Leader being assessed.
Can the GELI be re-administered so that progress can be measured?
Though GELI Online itself does not provide comparative data between administrations, you are encouraged to renew a Leader, re-administer the inventory , and compare your Leaders’ progress as illustrated by the Feedback Reports.
What is an Administrator, a Leader, and an Observer?
- Administrator Sometimes referred to as a Facilitator or Executive Coach , the Administrator, sets up Leader profiles, administers inventories, collects and enters answers into GELI Online, and generates Feedback Reports.
- Leader This is the person whose leadership behavior is being assessed. The Leader will be doing a self-assessment, as well asking others (Observers) to assess his or her leadership behaviors.
- Observer Selected by the Leader, these individuals provide feedback on the Leader's leadership behaviors.
What kind of Observers should Leaders choose?
It's important that the Observers actually have experience working with the Leader or observing them in a leadership role. We encourage Leaders to recruit all people they directly manage to be Observers. Beyond that, the more diverse the population of Observers, the more informative is their feedback. Recruit coworkers, managers, business associates, or even family members and friends.
Will the Leader be able to identify my responses?
The GELI Online system was designed to help preserve the anonymity of Observers; however,
there are a few things to keep in mind. GELI Online asks Leaders to categorize their relationship
with each Observer as a (1) Superior (2) Coworker, (3) Direct Report, or (4) Other. When the
Leader views his or her GELI Feedback Report, the Observer feedback from each relationship
category is pooled and presented by category individuals are not identified.
If you are a manager concerned about anonymity, please contact your GELI Online
Administrator.
Purchasing on GELI Online
What can I purchase on GELI Online?
You will be purchasing Leader Licenses. GELI Online charges for each Leader who takes the
GELI survey. The Leader's Observers, however, participate at no additional cost.
What is a Leader License?
A Leader License provides an individual you specify (a Leader) with access to specific portions
of GELI Online. The Leader will use that access to take his or her leadership assessment
inventory (the GELI Self). The Leader will also use the site to communicate with and manage
Observers the Leader selects to fill out their own surveys (the GELI Observer).
What information do I need before I purchase GELI Online?
You will need to think about how many GELI Online Leaders you will be buying for over the
next 12 months. It is important to remember that the prices and discounts are based on a 12-
month license. If you do not use the licenses you purchased within 12 months, they will expire.
Beyond that, you will also need to have:
- Your basic contact information.
- Your credit card number if you would like to access the site immediately. GELI Online
accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
Once that information is entered and your credit card is validated, you will receive an email
providing instructions for logging onto GELI Online.
Do you accept purchase orders?
We do accept purchase orders. However, a GELI Sales Representative must be on hand to guide
you through the approval process. Because of this, there may be a waiting period before you will
have access to GELI Online. You can gain immediate access if you use a credit card as payment.
How do I purchase an Observer License? How many can I have per Leader?
Observer Licenses are provided at no additional cost when you purchase a Leader License. There is no
limit to the number of Observers that each Leader may assign, but we recommend 7 to 10.
How many Observers should Leaders select?
To get the most benefit out of GELI Online, the authors recommend gathering feedback from 7
or more Observers.

through one of the following methods:

Organizations
What are Organizations and how are they used?
As an Administrator, GELI Online provides you with two levels for classifying Leaders: Organizations and
Groups. The names suggest their common usage:
- Organizations are created to reflect the multiple companies, clients, or business units
you may be serving.
- Groups are used to further categorize Leaders within an Organization, such as by department, location, or administration date.
Can a Leader change Organizations?
Yes. You may edit the Leader’s Profile to change their Organization affiliation.
Can a Leader belong to more than one Organization?
No. A Leader can belong to only one Organization.
How many Organizations can I create?
There is no limit to the number of Organizations you can create.
Groups
What are Groups and how do Groups relate to Organizations?
You can create Groups to help you organize or categorize your Leaders into sensible sets, such as by department or office. They provide a second level in which to hierarchically organize your Organizations. The Scoring Software also provides you with the option of working with multiple Organizations. The names suggest their common usage:
- Organizations are created to reflect the multiple companies, clients, or business units
you may be serving
- Groups are used to further categorize Leaders within an Organization, such as by department, location, or administration date.
The functionality can be used in other ways, but the structure remains the same: Groups are a subset of
Organizations. Which means:
- Group members must always be from the same Organization
How are Groups used?
Groups can be used in a variety of ways. Below are a few examples:
- Within the Organization "Pfeiffer," you could set up a Group of Leaders for each department: Marketing, Editorial, and Production.
- Within the Organization "Excellent Software," you could set up a Group of Leaders for
each office location, such as the Colorado Office, the San Francisco Office, and the
Tokyo Office.
- Within the Organization "University of Oklahoma," you could set up Groups associated
with the time of the year, such as Fall Quarter Students, Winter Quarter Students, and
Spring Quarter Students.
How many Leaders can I include in a Group?
You can have as many Leaders in a Group as you need for your situation. There is no limit
imposed by the system. You may even create Groups that contain no Leaders, which can help
you plan for Leaders you would like to add in the future.
Can a Leader belong to more than one Group? Can Leaders change Groups?
No. A Leader can only belong to one Group at a time. However, you can change a Leader's Group at any time, by editing a particular Group.
Reports
When can I generate a report?
You can generate a report for a Leader after you have entered survey scores for two or more observers.
How can I create a report that will allow me to compare Leaders data over several administrations or determine group averages?
Consider choosing the Tab Delimited option when you are generate the Feedback Report. This will allow you a create report in a text format that can be imported into a variety of database and spreadsheet applications (such as Excel) Then, you will be able to work with the data anyway you would like.
About the Inventories
If I don't know how to score the Leader on a specific statement, can I just leave it blank?
No, every question must be answered. However, Questions 81-100 on the Observer Survey do allow for an answer of Not Observed.
Can I change my responses to the inventory after I have clicked SUBMIT?
No, once an inventory has been submitted to the system, it cannot be changed or updated.
How many Observers should each Leader have?
We recommend that each Leader have 7 to 10 Observers.
What if one or more of the assigned Observers fails to fill out the Observer Survey?
At least two Observers answers are required to generate a report. Above that, if one or more Observers ultimately do not fill out the GELI Observer, their input will not become part of the report. However, the failure of Observers to respond is not a score or element of the feedback given to a Leader.
